Drawing as critique of power
Siri Dokken, professor of satirical drawing at KHiO held a seminar about the contemporary critical function of satirical drawing.
- Some of the students took part in a workshop leading up to the seminar where they where tasked with doing a caricature in less than a minute in order to explore the pitfalls of stereotypes when trying to communicate visually in a short amount of time. The students also did a satirical drawing based around the midterms in the US, with a very tight deadline. Andrea Ferkingstad, one of the students who took part in the workshop, and also watched the seminar, thought the tight deadlines were and interesting challenge. «We learn to think idea-centrically at school, and we are used to using a lot of time fine tuning our ideas. That was out of the question when working with the tight deadlines of this workshop. One feels it is much more difficult to do the best work possible, but there is some freedom in that. Knowing that is not an option, and not needed» Andrea says. The student works were shown as part of the seminar. Dokken had invited three prominent scandinavian satirists to talk about and discuss the importance and restrictions of satirical drawings today. Marvin Halleraker, Erik Petri and Karin Sunvisson did a talk each about they practice. Attending were many prominent satirical cartoonists, and this led to interesting discussions during the Q and A section of the seminar.
